How to type accents on Google Docs

Google Docs has a Special characters tool where you can search for or draw any letter, and substitutions that turn a short code into an accented letter as you type.

Click Insert → Special characters.
Type "e with acute" or the code 00E9 in the search box, or draw the letter in the box.
Click é to insert it.

Use your computer's shortcut

Docs accepts whatever your operating system types. On Windows use Alt+0233; on a Mac use Option+E, then E; on a Chromebook press Ctrl+Shift+U, type 00E9 and press Space.

Automatic substitution

Go to Tools → Preferences → Substitutions.
Add a shortcut such as eee in the left column and paste é in the right.
Click OK. Typing the shortcut and a space now inserts é.
