How to Type å (A with ring above) on Google Docs

The letter å does not have its own key on an English keyboard, but Google Docs still makes it easy to type. Use Insert → Special characters, or pick one of the other methods in this guide. å appears in Swedish, Norwegian, Danish and Finnish.

Method 1: Special characters menu

  1. Click Insert → Special characters.
  2. Type "a with ring above" or the code 00E5 in the search box, or draw the letter in the box.
  3. Click å to insert it.

Method 2: Use your computer's shortcut

Docs accepts whatever your operating system types. On Windows use Alt+0229; on a Mac use Option+A; on a Chromebook press Ctrl+Shift+U, type 00E5 and press Space.

Method 3: Automatic substitution

  1. Go to Tools → Preferences → Substitutions.
  2. Add a shortcut such as aaa in the left column and paste å in the right.
  3. Click OK. Typing the shortcut and a space now inserts å.

How to type the capital Å

The uppercase form works the same way with Shift added where a letter is typed.
