The Accent Letters

How to type accents on HTML

In HTML you can write accented letters directly if the page is UTF-8, or use named and numeric entities when you cannot.

Example: typing é

Codes for web pages

FormatCode for é
Named entityé
Decimal entityé
Hex entityé
CSS contentcontent: "\00E9";
JavaScript"\u00E9"
URL encoded%C3%A9
UTF-8 bytesC3 A9

Type it directly with UTF-8

If your page starts with <meta charset="utf-8"> and the file is saved as UTF-8, you can paste é straight into the HTML. Entities are only needed when your editor or database cannot store the character.

Watch for normalization

é can also be written as e plus a combining mark. Both look the same but compare as different strings. In JavaScript, call str.normalize("NFC") before comparing or searching.
