The Accent Letters

How to Use the US-International Keyboard on Windows

Published September 30, 2026, 3 min read

The United States-International layout keeps the normal US key positions but turns five keys into accent keys, and adds extra letters on Right Alt.

How to add it

  1. Open Settings → Time & language → Language & region.
  2. Next to your language, open Language options.
  3. Under Keyboards, click Add a keyboard and choose United States-International.
  4. Switch layouts with Win+Space.

Dead keys

' adds an acute, ` a grave, ^ a circumflex, " an umlaut and ~ a tilde to the next letter. To type the symbol itself, press the key and then Space.
