How to Type ü (U with umlaut) on iPhone

The letter ü does not have its own key on an English keyboard, but iPhone still makes it easy to type. Use Hold u, or pick one of the other methods in this guide. ü appears in Spanish, French, German and Hungarian.

Method 1: Long-press the letter

  1. Open the keyboard in any app.
  2. Touch and hold the u key.
  3. Slide your finger to ü and lift it.

ü is on the long-press menu of the default English keyboard and Gboard shows a similar set.

Method 2: Add the Spanish keyboard

  1. Open Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards.
  2. Tap Add New Keyboard and choose Spanish.
  3. Tap the globe key to switch while typing.

Method 3: Text Replacement

Go to Settings → General → Keyboard → Text Replacement, tap +, paste ü as the phrase and type a shortcut such as uum. The shortcut syncs to your Mac through iCloud.

How to type the capital Ü

The uppercase form works the same way with Shift added where a letter is typed.

ü is Unicode U+00FC, named LATIN SMALL LETTER U WITH DIAERESIS. It is used in Spanish, French, German, Hungarian, Turkish, Dutch, Catalan and Estonian. Two dots above a letter. As a German umlaut it changes the vowel sound (ä, ö, ü); as a diaeresis in French, Dutch, Spanish or English (naïve, Noël) it shows that a vowel is pronounced separately.
